Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Steelbronze shrills loudly, one head snapping at the flying jerky in what looked more like irritation than a deliberate catch. It seems surprised when it discovers it is holding food, and a second head turns to investigate. The first head gives a low, raspy hiss and gulps down the jerky, and the hydra drops back down onto all fours, heads twisting and writhing as they appear to compete for the bits of jerky on the ground. One head gets too close to another, and they snap at each other, hissing angrily, while the other five heads ignore them in favor of snatching up scraps from the pavement.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Knowing there were two more by the sound, and seeing two more appear, were very different things. Fourteen mouths filled with very sharp teeth, fourteen sets of eyes, two heavy bodies- Tanner took a step back without meaning to, trying to keep track of both monsters, trying to keep track of Riesy-
-the noise shifted abruptly, one hydra going quiet, one suddenly making very different sounds. The one in front of him was still shrilling, three heads now focused on Eve, two still watching him- but one was craning around to look toward the front of the party, and one had dropped low and was looking behind him, and the air was full of the unmistakable smell of heavily-processed meat. He glanced over his shoulder, and no, yeah, Riesy was pelting one of the monsters with beef jerky.
“Are- are we not fighting?” he called, voice thin and uncertain, barely loud enough to be heard over the gold-and-blue monster’s screaming. “Is- what are we doing, here?”

"We are running while they are distracted," Isabelle answered in a tone that brooked no argument. "Anybody got anything else to feed the third one?"
She glanced over her shoulder to see if the way was clear and started moving away from the screaming monsters one step at a time, keeping an eye out to make sure they were still distracted.
"Come on," she called to the rest of her party who did not look convinced. "We're burning daylight," she warned.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Lilybeth was still a little dazed by what she'd sensed from the hydras--they, were, well not alive in the usual way and that was plain creepy. Guess meat worked on 'em well enough though. She had a random flash of memory--reading Edith Hamilton's Mythology in English class. She really hoped no one's Trouble had constructed the other 11 labors of fucking Hercules out here.
She knotted her rope to the keychain loop on the end of her Swiss Army knife, just to have something to swing if needed, then huried after Isabelle,

Doc dumped out the rest of the meat - there might've been more monsters to come, but distracting the hydras in front of them was more important than distracting possible monsters later.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
“...Yes,” Tanner said reluctantly, because he distantly recalled shoving food into his newly-acquired backpack to take back to the school. He wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea of trying to feed the angry monster in front of him, but he supposed it was definitely better if it was eating snack food instead of trying to eat them. Slowly, trying to ignore the shrill strings harping at his ears as anxiety flooded him, he shrugged his backpack off of one shoulder and dug through it, trying to find the jerky without actually looking away from the angry, snake-like faces
One head craned close enough to sniff at the pack, and only the fact that he’d been given clear instructions kept him from taking a swing at it just to try and make it back up. He found the plastic bag, and pulled it out, tearing it open with his teeth, not wanting to actually let go of his bat. Once it was open enough, he gave it a sharp flick, sending the contents flying, and the monster’s heads followed, the body struggling to turn around as the heads reached out in multiple directions.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
As soon as the hydra she'd been dancing with was distracted, Eve turned tail and bounded through the group and past the lead hydra. She paused as soon as she was on clear road and looked back to the group, tail flicking.
<We should hurry, before they finish eating,> she called to Doc. <We need to get out of their line of sight at least.>

Isabelle relaxed fractionally when Tanner pulled the snacks from his pack and the hydra went after it but she kept backing away from the creepy little beasts carefully and methodically. She just hoped that was it, that they'd be distracted enough for her and her charges to get away from them. She risked a glance at the sky. The sun was just starting to ease toward the horizon, long rays of golden light stretched across the blacktop. She didn't let the mid afternoon light fool her. With the shroud up it got dark earlier now than it usually would. She had no intentions of letting them still be outside of the highschool when night fell. She shuddered, hard at the thought.
"Come on guys," she insisted again, voice low and urgent.

"She's right. Eve says we gotta get out of sight before those things finish the food," Doc said, setting off.

Eve waited until Doc caught up, and then kept pace beside him, tail and ears up on alert.
<That was good thinking, with the food. We probably would have been in trouble trying to fight them.>

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
As the rest of the group started to move, and the monster in front of him remained focused on the food- with only a single head turning to watch Eve bound away- Tanner shifted back a step, then another, trying not to draw attention.
“For once, I agree with the dragon lady,” Riesy quipped from beside him, and Tanner reached out with his free hand without thinking it through, catching Riesy’s wrist and steering shim back a little, making sure they were staying as close to the ‘middle’ of the space between the monsters as they could.
“No kidding,” Tanner managed, the words strained and thin. He wanted away as quickly as they could manage, and he kind of hated that they weren’t just running, even if it probably was better to just. Walk without drawing attention. He kept hold of Riesy’s wrist as they cleared the last monster, and kept his attention focused behind them, just in case they decided to follow.

"Just glad it worked," Doc grunted. "Was a gamble."

Eve makes a small, pleased prrt noise at Doc, and trots ahead of him, leading the way.

“‘‘Twas a sure gamble,” Riesy said lightly to Doc, following away from the monsters easily. S/he clapped shiz free hand to shiz own stomach and looked back at Tanner. “Can always count on a growing boy’s appetite.” S/he winked, sliding their fingers together for a quick squeeze before disengaging to crane shiz neck ahead.
“I swear to fuckin Christ though, if we’re unlucky enough for something to be swimming in that lake, I quit.”

"Riesy!" Lilybeth whisper-yelled, "Don't tempt the wrath of the Whatever from High Atop the Thing, c'mon!"

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Tanner blushed and dropped his head, flexing his fingers once to a sudden sweep of flutes before reaching up to drag them through the hair at the back of his neck in an uncertain, flustered gesture.
“Figured we should bring back what we could,” he explained, before he went wide-eyed at the notion of something being in the lake.
The acid lake. That they still had to get back across.
Damn.
...He couldn’t help the huff of almost-laughter that escaped at Lilybeth’s warning; it did feel a little like tempting God.

"No such thing, wouldn't be a gamble," Doc snorted.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
As the group passes out of sight of the hydras, they approach a stretch of road they raced through quickly on their way out, distracted as they were by Isabelle’s medical emergency. A stand of trees stands to one side of the road, branches shifting in a delicate breeze that seems to move nothing else. Despite the time of year, there are silvery leaves on the branches, and there is a strange glimmer reflecting off of them, as though there is a source of light hidden somewhere within the grove.
Everyone please make an Intellect: Perception check.
