Re: The Old Lady's Lair
"Hey Squirt," Riesy said, catching Lilybeth's eye. "Give the book to Isabel, okay? You two walk a little faster, and whatever happens at this point, you keep going until you're back inside, got it?" S/he crossed in front of Doc a little, slowing shiz pace and tugging at the sleeve of Tanner's shirt.
"No offense, boys, but this is what we signed up f-" S/he cut shimself off and looked at Tanner. "Well." S/he jerked shiz chin at Izzy and Lilybeth. "Cover their six, if you're going."

"Isabelle?" Lilybeth asked softly, "would that work? Because I'm more than happy to pass it over if it would."
She looked over at Riesy. "We've still got a ways to go--let's try to stay together if we can."

Eve bristles while listening to everyone, and hesitates halfway between the girls with the book and the rest of the party. The book needs to make it home, but her favorite people are about to get into trouble. She gives herself a little shake, and plants her feet, ready to help fight, to give them time to get out with the book.

Hesitating, Tanner slowed further, giving Riesy a flatly confused look.
“Splitting up?” he asked, giving a quick shake of his head. “What if there’s more bugs? Or fire?” Izzy had nearly died because of the bugs. “Or- worse things?” Sending Izzy and Lilybeth on alone seemed- risky. A lot.
“Team’s strongest with everyone together.”

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
"It's probably a good idea if I take the book," Izzy said her face set in a frown. "I don't like the idea of splitting up either but if we don't get the book back to the highschool..." then the fog wall will stay up and we'll have died for nothing feels too much like tempting fate for her to say outloud.
Izzy accepted the book from Lily, zipping it into her backpack without stopping was a little difficult but Riesy was right. If something happened it would be safer with her than the rest of the party. She hitched both straps of her backpack on once the book was inside then took Lilybeth's hand.

Riesy caught Izzy's eye and nodded grimly to see at least one other pragmatist among them. S/he grabbed Tanner's arm, right above the elbow where s/he knew the tendons were cranky, and spun him back the direction they were going while corralling Eve with one extended boot, though s/he knew better than to connect. "You're entirely right, then let's stick together, just...with them on the side closest to the school." S/he kept hold of his arm, keeping his pace slower than the girls' and staying in front of Doc to mitigate the length of his stride.

Doc grunted approval. "Too far t'go to be sending those two alone. Could risk if it we were close, but not now."

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
As the party discusses, and the group stretches into more of a line, a series of sussurating cries rise, one to the left, one to the right, and one further down the road. It rises and falls, like overlapping sirens, or the shrill sounds of insects.
As Izzy and Lilybeth approach a scrubby juniper, something in dull shades of jade and copper darts out from beneath it, settles itself in the road, and screams. The shrill sound gets louder and more urgent, several different notes rising into one as seven sharp-toothed mouths gape threateningly, and seven pairs of jewel-bright ruby eyes glare from constantly-weaving heads.
The hydra is about three feet long, with four heavy, claw-tipped legs and a low, squat body. Each head perches atop a long, thin neck, and sharp barbs run down its spine all the way to the tip of its thrashing tail.
It looks hungry.

Here goes nothing
There was no control to the action, Riesy clenched shiz hands behind shiz neck and bent over to protect shiz core from the pain of the noise. S/he raised shiz head and screeched back at the nasty fuck, getting high and shrill the way s/he hated but oh fuckin' well.

"You have got to be kidding me!" Izzy protests. "I hate this town!" she shouts while the hydra screeches louder than she can yell.

Lilybeth shudders. That is way too many heads for one critter.

Doc carefully crouched down, getting ready to open his pack. "Hey, little buddy," he spoke soothingly.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Izzy stomped at the little monster hoping to scare it off and then dragged Lilybeth back the few steps to their party. Better to have eyes on all sides. Heaven knew those things did.
She wished desperately for a weapon.

Eve doesn't hesitate, darting around the thing on the side with the most room, careful to keep out of strike range of its heads until she is behind it. She stops as soon as she is past it, arches her back, and YOWWWLLLS at it.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Lilybeth put her hand on her Swiss Army Knife. Not that it seemed like it'd be much fucking use against a hydra. Wait--she might not have good physical weapons, but maybe--just maybe--the other kind would be useful...

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Well that- was a problem. Tanner broke loose of Riesy’s grip, shifting aside- he wanted to turn and take a swing at the monster in the middle of the road, but Doc looked like he was planning something, and there was still screaming coming from both sides of the road behind them.
“Guess we don’t have a choice,” he said, because they weren't going anywhere, now. He braced, attention focused on the two still-unseen threats, bat raised and ready.
(Tanner reserves an action for next round)

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Three of the hydra’s heads lunge in Eve’s direction, twisting on long necks to try and snap at her, but the body remains facing the rest of the party, four heads straining and snapping at Izzy and Lilybeth’s retreating forms. The hydra shifts in place, its tail thrashing and its scream becoming discordant and harsh.
Lilybeth reaches, sensing for water in the snarling creature before her- and feels none. For an instant, she feels something- but it is not water. It calls to the very core of her, hollow and hungry and achingly lonely- and then the sensation is gone, leaving only a disquieting echo of something unknown and yet familiar.
As the first hydra’s cry fractures, the other two grow louder, and movement flashes. From the left, a hydra colored like steel and bronze feints at Riesy, rising up on two legs for a moment to posture. From the right, a slightly larger, gold-and-blue hydra moves more slowly into view, two heads watching Tanner’s bat, the rest each focused on a different member of the party.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Doc slowly reached into his pack and pulled out the bundle of meat he'd brought out of Target for the invisible monster. "You look hungry, how 'bout a snack?" he coaxed the nearest hydra, tossing a piece of meat in its general direction.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
The heads which had been focused on Eve snap back around, and all draw back in unison stretching up into a series of graceful arches. The cry becomes unified again and rises in pitch, then cuts off abruptly. The hydra launches itself at the meat, heads snapping in a repeating sequence as it tears into the offered food. Its tail continues to thrash, but it pays no mind to anything but its meal.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Eve looks up at Doc, still arched. <They smell wrong. Bad. Not like animals. You might not have much luck making friends if they're someone's Trouble.>
With that, she darts back around the distracted Hydra and straight toward the nearest one threatening the group. She spits and hisses and weaves in ALMOST close enough to strike at, doing her best to be a distraction so the others might have better chances with weapons.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
While s/he was fighting down vomit, Riesy saw Doc tempt the thing in the front with his haul from Target. Well, one monster was as good as another. S/he straightened and hollered back at the bug threatening shim while swinging shiz backpack around to dig in it for the jerky s/he had packed that morning just in case.
S/he'd apologize to the men in shiz family later. S/he ripped the plastic open with shiz teeth and flicked it off behind them, hoping the thing would give chase. Of course, not all the strips came out of the plastic envelope. S/he scrabbled at the remaining greasy pieces and threw them in the fucker's faces, stumbling backwards and away.
