Event: Target

With a shriek and an instinctive toss of shiz pack back the way s/he came, like tossing gear clear in the event of a fall, Riesy sank into the floor. "Stay back!" S/he yelled, spreading shiz arms wide and relaxing whatever hold s/he kept on shiz Trouble. Anything to repel them back from whatever held shim.

Tanner was still puzzling over the ‘baseball cards’ comment as they started to move, and then Riesy shrieked, the sound puckering like lemon oil. Her warning kept Tanner from actually stepping directly onto the tile himself, but he could see that Riesy was sinking, that somehow the surface of the tile wasn’t solid. Beside him, Isabelle was also making a grab for Riesy, but Tanner didn’t actually wait to see if she connected; he reached out and snagged Riesy around the waist, hauling back with as much force as he could put into it.

There was a moment of resistance, and then nothing; Tanner dropped backwards, landing hard on the carpeted floor at the feet of the rest of the group, Riesy landing safely- if heavily- on top of him.

Doc knelt cautiously beside the aisle, stripping a garment off its hanger and poking the linoleum with the hanger.  It sank down.  "Can't touch bottom," he said, pulling it back.

Riesy had and had not been here before. It was like any accident in the rigging at work. Strong arms wrapped around shim from behind, and s/he grasped onto them, tasting bark and sap, and drew shiz knees into shiz chest like s/he had been taught to to get free and fall. After that, it was arms up, chin down.

S/he gasped at the ceiling twice, wondering at shiz dumb luck lately, then saw Isabelle's back - in front of shim. Next to where s/he had told her not to go. Irritation, maybe displaced but slightly justified, sparked through shim. S/he flailed and kicked and rolled, not finding the floor and finally shoving off a warm chest that tasted like honeysuckle to stomp over to their stupidly fearless leader.

"Did you not hear me?" s/he snapped, grabbing the shoulder of Isabelle's coat and tugging her around by it. S/he did not want to risk a direct grab, the woman might vertigo out and fall into the tiles. "I said back, I meant back, and I meant it when I said if I call retreat you listen!"

S/he flung a hand out to where Tanner was still sprawled on the floor and the other three who had not even had time to react yet. "What the hell were they gonna do without you if you fell in there? Huh? What's the combination to the safe, Isabelle, where is it in the house, which house even is it? I am dead serious," Riesy raised a finger under Isabelle's nose, "this does not happen again."

S/he stalked back over to Tanner on the ground, dropping down to shiz knees next to him and ripping his coat open to tug the pool cue from his front pocket. "Thanks," s/he grunted, unable to come up with anything better at the moment.

S/he rocked back onto shiz feet in one motion, flicking the cue out to its full length and going to fish it around in the "tiles."

"Me either," s/he said to Doc.

Isabelle recoiled from the taste of grapefruit in the words. "I heard you the first time," she growled but there was no bite in the reply. "I'm not going to touch it, just trying to see what it was. It looks like linoleum but you just slid right in..." Isabelle looked down at Riesy's foot but it looked no worse for the wear in shiz heavy boots. "I didn't know it was a fall-in type of situation! It looked like you walked forward and didn't know there was a step down."

Isabelle looked up from the tile at the finger under her nose. "The Soleil house is #2, big white house, safe is in the attic, but yes, next time I will listen," she reassured Riesy.

She peered with interest as the cue just slid in like it was water or paint or...

"Quicksand," she murmured. "The floor is quicksand!" she announced to her stunned team.

Doc eyed the innocent-looking tile sourly.  "Too far to the canoes, and the racks are no good.  Got some cord on me, but not too much,  Anyone got anything useful?"

"Um, I have rope," Lilybeth replied.

Riesy slumped over onto shiz hip, leaning into Isabelle's leg. "Sorry," s/he mumbled. Then s/he pushed up to her feet to go to the other end of the carpet and poke at the tiles there.

The cue sunk in. S/he turned back to Isabelle. "We're surrounded."

Isabelle patted Riesy on the shoulder ignoring the wavy blue squiggles of sorry in the touch. "S'fine. You were mostly right."

"Surrounded. By quicksand. In a Target," Isabelle gave a slightly hysterical laugh. "Sure, why not!" She shouted at the ceiling.

Riesy smiled softly at the brush of Isabelle's sarcasm, remembering the honey in her touch. At this point s/he felt that way too.

S/he raised shiz chin at Lilybeth. "How much rope?"

"Aisles aren't that wide.  Open space by the doors'll be a problem," Doc observed, and turned to Riesy.  "If I hang onto you, can you lean across an' poke at the floor across the aisle?  See if this' just the tile or if it's all like this?"

Riesy shrugged one shoulder. "Sure. Gimme a minute."

S/he set the cue down by where shiz pack had landed, shrugging the coat off and laying it on top. Then s/he folded down cross legged on the floor, taking shiz watch off and holding it in shiz lap. S/he focused on it and just breathed.

Doc shrugged and looked around while he waited, considering what else they could use.  How sturdy were those changing stalls really, he wondered...
