Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Riesy gave a pretty unkind snort from the front of the line, happy to get back to just Tanner’s music to deal with. “Think she’d have heard us?”

Once they were well out of earshot, Lilybeth gave a sudden laugh. Self-consciously, she said, "Sorry, I'm just...thinking about how I'm gonna explain figurine-induced flashbacks to my Grammy."

"I'm never going to be able to go into Target again," Isabelle groaned with real anguish.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Despite everything, Tanner couldn’t help a faint laugh at Lilybeth’s comment. She wasn’t the only one likely to be jumpy around that kind of thing from now on.
Not that there was much in the way of alarming decoration at the high school.
He felt a surge of sympathy at Izzy’s plaintive words, which sent a swirl of melancholy strings into the air- probably entirely more dramatic an accompaniment than Izzy needed or wanted, and he blushed and tried to focus on the fact that they’d gotten the book and they could go back. It was a relief, at least.

Riesy tossed an arm around Izzy's neck. "Besides, you can always cash in hella favors, dude, we got the damn book! We're heroes!" S/he whooped once...then remembered to crane shiz head around to make sure they were still out of the Invisibeast's radius.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Izzy laughed and let her head drop against Riesy's shoulder as they walked and let the relief overwhelm her for a minute. They'd done it. They'd gotten the book.
Then she straightened and took a breath. "We just have to get back now. Before dark," she added with a nervous look at the sky as if her worry might bring the night on faster. With the way things had been going it just might.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
The path remains relatively clear as the party moves back through town. Despite everything, nothing emerges to challenge them as they pass between buildings, and the great invisible beast appears to be elsewhere. The party reaches the long stretch of road that leads back to the school after about thirty minutes of cautious walking, at about three o’clock- the sun is dipping toward the horizon, shadows stretching long but not yet entirely ominous.
Players, please roll 1d10 and add your Intellect score. (Eve gains a +2 to this check)

Isabelle rolls 10 + 8 = 18!
Izzy's eyes keep darting around despite the quiet, she's just waiting for the next thing to jump out at them. There's no way they're getting back to the school this easy.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Beside the road, in the gaps between debris and broken fencing and scrubby evergreen hedges, movement attracts the eye of several party members. Doc, Izzy, and Lilybeth spot traces of dusty brown and faint flickers of bronze appearing and disappearing, moving inconsistently. The movement appears to be shadowing the party.

Doc scowled and moved between their unknown tail and the rest of the group. "Being followed," he said softly, flicking his eyes in the direction of it.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Riesy had turned from Izzy to make a crack at Tanner about their newfound heroism, but at Doc's quiet statement s/he slipped sideways, following the flick of his eyes and putting shimself between the threat and the book. "Head count?" s/he asked, just as quietly, without looking.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Izzy wanted very much to stomp her feet and cry but since nothing had whammied her into a second childhood she resisted the urge. Instead she forced herself to continue at a normal place.
"Can you even tell what it is?" she asked quietly. "It's moving too fast for me."

"No. Can't get a count either." Doc said tersely. "Check our six and three, see if there's any other threat."

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Lilybeth shuddered and tightened her arms around the book. Should she try to stuff it in her pack or something? She shifted closer to Doc, trying to make herself less of a target.

Re: The Old Lady's Lair
Tanner tensed at Doc’s quiet words, and exhaled a quiet acknowledgement at Riesy’s request for a check-in. He tightened his grip on his bat, and looked around, glancing back and right, but not sure what he was looking for. He dropped back a step, giving himself room in case he needed to start swinging, and turned to keep an eye out behind them, in case anything launched itself from that direction. He did his best to keep his attention moving, looking up as well as back- he didn’t want to get caught off-guard again by some other flying thing.
