“After you,” Tanner agreed, trying to keep out of everyone’s way- honestly, he was more than happy to hang back, and let the rest of the group move on ahead. He kept close enough to Riesy to be helpful if s/he did slip, but hesitated at the top of the stairs, taking a position slightly behind Doc.

Odds were, whoever was up there wasn’t going to be happy with any of them, but Tanner was likely doubly unwelcome, and he’d rather not draw attention to himself if he could avoid it.

Agatha

“So you’re the ones who’ve been tromping all over my house, ruining my things,” the old woman sneers, glaring at them with bright, crafty blue eyes.  “Didn’t your mothers teach you it was rude to come into someone’s home uninvited or is it that only the Troubled know about manners?”

Her knitting needles keep flashing even as she speaks. On the floor at her feet sits the plug for the record player despite the music coming out of the device.

Agatha Soleil may be in her eighties but this is her house, and she’ll be damned if she lets anyone in it to loot or wreck it as they please. She didn’t leave when her good for nothing sister did because this is her place. If she dies here then so be it.

-------------------

Diplomacy Challenge:
The players must convince Agatha to give them the book.  To do so, the party must succeed for three rounds before five failures.

The initial rounds of Diplomacy will include Izzy, Riesy, Lilybeth, and Doc.  If Agatha’s attention is drawn to Eve or Tanner (or both), they will be drawn into the round and the challenge rating will go up.

For being from well-known Troubled families of good standing, Lilybeth and Riesy both receive a +3 to their Diplomacy (Interpersonal) checks.

Izzy and Doc presently receive no bonuses, though Izzy may apply her Bluff (Interpersonal) bonus for IC communication.

Round One: Players, roll 1d10 and add Interpersonal and any listed bonus.
Total Score Necessary to Succeed: 40

Isabelle puts on her most polite smile and takes a step forward, reaching blindly behind her to grab at Riesy and pull s/him along with her. If they have an ambassador Riesy's it.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Soleil," she says as nicely as she can.

Riesy stared at the back of Izzy's head with wide eyes, then over at their hostess in her chair. S/he could barely think past the thrumming of the music over every exposed bit of shim. "G-good afternoon, Auntie," s/he tried. "Can you lower the music, so we don't have to shout?"

“I’m not your auntie youngster,” Agatha sets her knitting needles on the small table beside her to better glare at the boy, girl, who even knew these days with all the flannel and the bad haircuts the kids had decided were in fashion. “My family has better manners than to come into people’s homes and make demands of them about their music.” She got laboriously to her feet, the old bones weren’t what they used to be. That was alright though, her Trouble still worked fine.

“Well?” she demanded once she was standing. “Why are you all here, breaking into an old lady’s house and scaring her senseless?”

Doc decided to let the more eloquent (and less misanthropic) members of the group do the talking, and did his part by not looming too threateningly. He had an idea that the sharp-tongued old lady wouldn't respond well to being threatened - or thinking she was.

Izzy suppressed the urge to yell at the old lady for snapping at Riesy. She would be pretty cranky herself if someone had broken into her house. She also would have volunteered the damn information in the book however considering it might help save people's lives.

"We're sorry to disturb you ma'am," she began, stepping forward to direct the woman's eyes on her and not the rest of her group. "We heard your family had a book once, a book that might make the difference between taking the fog wall down or the whole town starving with it up." Izzy hoped the woman cared about starving kids and animals.

"We didn't know you were home or we would have knocked. Everyone's evacuated to the high schools for now. It's safer that way," she tried a reassuring smile.

"Would you be alright with lending us the book?"

"We'd bring it back, of course," Riesy chimed in, given how techy the woman seemed, "and maybe some supplies if you're fittin' to stay. My uncle would surely want to check in with you, Mrs. Soleil, now we know you're here." Maybe the mention of someone from her own generation would make her more generous. S/he fought down a shiver and tried to ignore the music.
