A flicker of light, as delicate as a firefly, drifts near the edge of the grove, hovering above what looks like a pathway.  It draws the attention of Izzy and Tanner, though the rest of the party does not immediately notice it.

The rustle of branches caught Tanner’s attention, and he looked up, eyeing the trees suspiciously, waiting for something else to jump out.  Instead, movement caught his eye- a single point of light, small and silver and hovering by the base of a tree.  He glanced at the strange light still hovering peaceably beside his shoulder- it was much larger, and glowing a healthy white instead of odd silver, but it had been harmless enough so far.

“Do you guys see that?” he asked, motioning at the small, floating flicker.  “D’you think there’s, maybe more of them?”

Lights, after all, would be useful, could be a really big help when the sun went down.

(Tanner’s comment draws the attention of the party, everyone is now aware of the light.)

Eve looks when Tanner speaks, and spots the tiny dot of light. Her pupils go wide and she crouches down immediately, ready to pounce. Her butt wiggles and she darts forward, claws wide to grab onto the light.

No, Izzy thinks firmly as she catches the glint of light reflecting off...something out of the corner of her eye. No. We are not going into the woods. We are going home.

Too late, Tanner makes his comment and Izzy curses silently to herself.

"Leave it alo--" she doesn't get to finish the instruction before Eve darts after it.

"Damnit, Eve!"

Riesy wrapped both arms around one of Doc’s thicker biceps, “No, don’t! Don’t go after it. Eve, Eve you gotta come back! Remember the steak I owe you, your seed shop, you’re a human and you belong up here on the road, come on!” S/he patted the big man’s shoulder.

“Help me call her back, break the thrall.”

S/he turned back towards the small black shape. “C’mon woman, you should know better than to fuck with the fairies, you work in a garden for fuck’s sake!”

“Oh-” Tanner bit off the rest of the exclamation, startled and no little alarmed. He hadn’t exactly meant that they should just go charging off after it, that seemed like a very bad idea, but-

-Eve was.

“Eve!” Tanner called out, before starting off after her- he wasn’t exactly cat-fast, but he was a runner, and he really didn’t like the idea of anyone going into the trees alone.

The warning about fairies barely registered; it didn’t mean anything in particular to him, and his attention was on trying not to lose sight of the fast-moving Eve.

"Eve, come back!" Lilybeth called, her voice sounding weak in her own ears. Fuckfuckfuck. She really hoped Riesy was wrong and it wasn't fairies. You didn't want to mess around with that lot.

"Does nobody have any common sense?" Izzy shouted, taking off after Tanner and Eve. This is her search party, she's responsible for these people. She might not be able to catch the cat but they had damn well better hear her shouting after them and turn around.

"Come back here!"

The silver light moves as Eve draws closer, drifting away down the path. It speeds up as she does, moving erratically back and forth, but keeping just ahead of her as she moves. It passes the first trunks, leading Eve further into the grove, heading for the center.

In the center of the grove, a mound of earth stands at the end of a worn track. Set into the side of the mound, a small archway of stone, rough-hewn and no more than a foot tall frames a gap. The stone itself looks like obsidian, smooth-edged like glass and translucent black, but it lacks the sheen obsidian usually has. Light pours out from beneath the archway, bright and clear and steady.

The light Eve is following speeds up abruptly, circling the mound once before vanishing through the archway.

Eve tracks the light, twitching and starting at it, putting her paws out every few steps as if to swat it. She freezes only a couple of feet from the archway, eyes locked on the light pouring from the opening.

She'll fit. She can totally fit through that.

Tanner heard the shouting from the road increase, and ignored it- Eve wasn’t that far ahead of him, if he just stretched out a little further, he could probably catch up- she’d get tired before he would, anyway. He charged past the first line of trees, and almost stumbled- up ahead, down the path and beyond the trees, he could see the strangest clearing he’d ever laid eyes on, and a tiny cave in a tiny hill, and it was glowing.

And Eve was just ahead, close- too close- to the entrance, but she’d stopped.

“Eve!” he called again, stretching his pace just a little further, because he had no idea what might be in the cave that was glowing, but he really didn’t want to find out.

(Tanner is about six yards back from Eve.)

This is the weirdest place for a garden, is Izzy's initial thought as she spots the archway that has to be a garden statue. Then she sees the light and a chill, a literal chill, runs down her spine. Holy shit what the hell? Riesy's words about the faeries come to mind.

"No," she says outloud. "Not even in Haven."

The light darts in the doorway and Izzy drops to her knees patting them frantically. "Eve! C'mere Eve!" she calls like she's calling the family cat to dinner. Nothing else has worked. Nothing else has made a difference. "Eve!" she makes that whispery noise people make when calling cats, dimly remembered from some great aunt. "Come here, Eve!"

Riesy's arms convulsively tightened around Doc's, unable to control the shaking spreading through shim. "C'mon," s/he whispered. "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon...come back. Come back!" The call was thready and weak and thick with unchecked tears. They had to come back, they were too close.

Doc swore viciously, then broke into a run after them, forcing Riesy to either let go or be dragged with him.

As everyone got farther away, Lilybeth pondered. She felt like a chump just standing there in the road, but wasn't sure if she could do anything to help or if she'd just make things worse. And they might need someone to stay on the path, to guide them back. But what if something happened to the book? Or to one of them, and she might have been able to help?

Thinking about fairy tales gave her an idea--she pulled the rope out of her pack, tied one end to a bush and the other to her pack, and plunged after them.

Eve glances over her shoulder at Tanner and Izzy when they enter the grove behind her, but doesn't seem like she recognizes them. Her gaze lingers for a split second on Izzy as the human calls her, but she doesn't come to the call.

Instead, she turns back and bounds into the little archway.

“Eve, don’t!” Tanner shouted, lunging forward and coming up short as Eve leapt, fingers catching soil instead of fur by less than a foot.

As soon as Eve tries to cross the threshold, the light goes blindingly bright. There is a sharp crack, a burst of ozone, and Eve is flung back, landing a good two yards away from the archway, almost precisely where she left. The air fills with a discordant chime, and the very air seems to radiate anger. A swarm of silver lights spill out from the archway, circling the mound in a whirling murmuration, before they rush inward. They glow brighter and brighter as they gather, until they vanish in a flash.

The mound vanishes with them, leaving nothing but bare dirt in its wake.

((Eve is dealt 20 points of lethal damage by the fae charm.))
