Doc snorted as Tanner fell into the tile trying to rescue Riesy.  He leaned over and grabbed the back of Tanner's shirt as if he were scruffing a naughty kitten, and pulled him out with one hand.

Tanner had barely gotten oriented when Lilybeth was pulling Riesy clear of the tile, getting her on solid ground. That was- that was good, that-

-pressure, at his neck and under his arms, and for an instant, Tanner felt a whole different kind of panic sweep over him. He only barely managed not to thrash as he registered that he was being lifted, not choked, that it was pressure on his shirt hauling him clear of the gripping, heavy mess. He went limp against the pull, and then he was clear, was out of the sand and over the carpet and-

-and being held up in one hand by Doc.

Tanner had always had a proper amount of polite fear for the massive and unsociable man, had been properly respectful and as quick as possible in serving his orders when he’d come into the Martin’s butcher shop, but it occurred to him, while he hung, that he had definitely not been scared enough. Not even close.

And then his feet were under him, and Tanner was a little puzzled to realize his knees were even supporting his weight, because his limbs felt like jello and his heart was pounding fast enough that he almost couldn’t hear the anxious whine of the music as it faded into relieved woodwinds.

“Thanks,” he rasped, the word catching in his throat. “A lot. Thanks.”

Eve yowled at Tanner in an incredibly obvious scolding tone. Of course they would have rescued Riesy, there was no need for Tanner to go tipping himself into the linoleum after shim.

Then she meowed at Riesy, tipping her head and cocking her ears forward like she was waiting for an answer.

Doc didn't bother to translate her comment to Tanner - it was clear enough.  Instead he looked at Riesy.  "She's asking if you're all right."

Isabelle’s focus centered down to the burn in her palms from hauling on the rope with Lilybeth, the galloping of her heart as it pounded against her ribcage and the trembling in her muscles. Riesy was out. S/he hadn’t been lost. But they still had the rest of the store to traverse. How many more times could she deal with possibly losing one of her team? Relief and Terror warred with each other until they cancelled each other out and there was nothing but a rush of white noise.

It was strange, how quiet everything in Riesy's head got. There was no background music tapping against shiz skin, or stale taste in shiz mouth like cold paper mache, not really. None of the panic that had been discussed at every safety seminar s/he'd ever attended for the woodcutting business started either. It was quiet, like being underwater, or outside after a hard snow. S/he could not move. S/he could barely breathe. S/he did not need the Irish rhymes to focus and calm, s/he did not think of what could have been done differently.

Then Tanner hit next to shim, and everything startled back into focus. "Fuck!" s/he yelled, then a loop of the rope landed in front of shim, and the training kicked back in. S/he auto-piloted clipping on, tugging with both hands to reel in faster, remembering to tuck shiz chin and ready to start barking orders once s/he was out.

But when s/he rolled onto shiz backside and scrambled away, there was no need to regroup and dive back in. Doc was already scruffing Tanner up to land next to shim, and once that relief hit, there wasn't enough air. S/he sobbed once, grabbing onto Lilybeth's leg to hug it close, legs coming up to protect shiz vulnerable core, which felt better and made it easier to breathe. They were okay. Even having fallen back into the cage of the tile, they had made it out okay, and even if they weren't McGlynns, s/he had a damn good team behind shim. "Thank you," s/he rasped, unable to make enough room to be louder, unable to find enough air, but there would be, now that s/he was out. Now that they were out.

Then the cat was hollering and that wasn't nice at all, they were okay, none of that, "No," s/he choked out, reaching to search for Tanner with shiz other hand and finding his ankle, "no don't yell at him." Shiz voice was barely there, but coming back. "He was trying to help!" S/he knew s/he was whining but couldn't stop.

Then Doc corrected shim, and s/he looked the long way up to him, safe on solid ground and between shiz two saviors, and all s/he had to respond was a soft, "Oh." S/he gave it a solid thought before closing shiz mouth and nodding, even as fat tears rolled over shiz lids. S/he shook shiz head to flip them away, then looked over at Isabelle. "I'm sorry, Izz. I'm sorry I fell in."

"You're SORRY?" Isabelle repeated incredulously. She put up a hand to cover her suddenly stinging eyes. "Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick! S/he's sorry!" Isabelle said again to no one in particular. She took a breath. Tried a glare, it was soft but the best she could do. "You better be sorry," she growled and that was closer to what she wanted. "Don't do that again," she ordered, holding a hand out to help Riesy off the ground.

Needing something to do, Lilybeth pulled out her hair tie, and ran her hands through her hair, then shook like a wet dog shaking out water. Then she knelt and wrapped her arms around Riesy, snaking one out to include Isabelle as well. Fuck, that had been close, that had been too damn close. And they still had more left to do before they even got to the ladders. The mantra in the back of her head felt like it was mocking her--don't fuck up, don't die and she added don't let anyone else die.

She smiled a rather wobbly smile at Doc and Tanner.

Well, fuck, they were hugging. Yeah, okay. Isabelle folded down, closed her eyes and held on. Lilybeth was trembling, poor kid, Izzy hoped no one could tell she was shaking too.

“Uh. Y-yessir, I- thanks,” Tanner said, surprised and oddly warmed by the inquiry. He hadn’t expected any further concern from Doc, had been grateful enough just for the rescue.

He went pink at the very obvious chiding from Eve, and ducked his head apologetically. “Sorry,” he offered, because really, it hadn’t been on purpose, but it had still definitely not been a particularly good move on his part.

Really, really not a good move. He shook himself out, trying to chase away the rush of adrenaline, trying to still the trembling in his hands that was more reaction than anything else. He was fine, and Riesy was okay, was clinging to Lilybeth and being clung to in turn and that- that was good, they were okay, nobody had gotten hurt.

Their- their team was prepared, had handled it. Their team could handle it.

Tanner met Lilybeth’s smile with a grateful, relieved grin- shaky, he knew, and chagrined, but real all the same. He hesitated, unsure of how far he wanted to push his luck, unsure how far relief would really carry him, but he sidled just a little closer to Riesy and Isabelle and Lilybeth, and put a hand on Riesy’s shoulder, giving her a gentle squeeze.

“Sorry,” he said, the word soft, but he forced a note of teasing into his tone as he added, “Not the most graceful rescue attempt.”

Riesy honked a laugh and thunked shiz forehead against Isabelle's before Tanner's touch made honeysuckle roll over shiz tongue again. With the first easy breath s/he had taken since being pulled from the tiles, s/he ran shiz hand higher on his leg to leverage shimself up from the floor, rising onto shiz toes to wrap both arms around him. "Thank you anyway," s/he said, unabashed at the scrape and tremor in shiz voice. "Are you okay?" He felt like summer and smelled like the dark red behind closed eyelids and it may have been the trauma talking but Riesy was probably the tiniest bit fucked.

Cautiously, Tanner hugged back, wrapping his arms around Riesy and holding on, taking a deep breath to try and steady himself.

“I’m okay. You’re alright?” he asked, needing to hear it. She’d already been in pretty rough shape, and she’d looked so shaken the first time, hadn’t really looked less shaken this time.

"Yes," s/he said with a nod, even though it was more breath than sound. S/he thought, if s/he lifted shiz toes from the ground, he'd be able to hold shim as surely as any rig.

S/he dropped back to shiz heels, and that was really as far as s/he was willing to go, but if Tanner did not indicate a desire for shim to stay close, s/he would move farther. "Alright. Ready to roll out?" S/he looked around at the group.

“Good,” Tanner said, the word soft and relieved. He couldn’t stop the slight twitch when Riesy dropped back onto her heels, the automatic tightening of his grip- and that wasn’t appropriate, he knew it wasn’t, but the impulse was still there. But he barely knew her, and he had no right, so he forced himself to relax his grip- not enough to actually break contact, but enough so that as soon as she pulled away, she’d be able to, because anything else would be unforgivably presumptuous.

He wasn’t entirely sure he wasn’t already being presumptuous, but Riesy had hugged him, so maybe this much was okay. Maybe he was enough a part of the team to be allowed to worry, to be allowed to care.

“Ready as I think I’m gonna get,” he added, trying to make it a joke, trying to conceal the very real nervousness he was feeling behind a self-deprecating laugh.

Eve meowed her readiness and then twitched her tail against Doc's shoulder. <He's the one we should be asking if he's ready> she told him wryly. <He's the one that just took a swim in the river of the damned.> she paused and then rubbed her head against Doc's cheek. <Gotta say though... that was pretty impressive of you. I knew you could scruff a cat and lift it... did not think that applied to humans.>

Eve laughed, a warm feeling without sound. <I meant that you could pick him up with one had at all. Especially against the quicksand... it's gotta be like mud when you get a shoe stuck in it. He's lucky you were here.>

She laughed again, though clearly not at him. It felt pleased. <I don't have hands> she pointed out. <Even if I did, we're getting the book back to keep people safe. Not many people knowingly put themselves at risk to protect others.> She flicked an ear and looked down at Tanner, still standing there nervously, looking like he'd like to bolt. <I'm not sure all of us really made choices, here. I followed Riesy because he was the first and only person to be kind to me since I became... like this. I'm not entirely sure Tanner didn't get lost and just follow us out here. And Lily... Well. She came because her dad couldn't. But you chose this. There's merit in that, Daniel. Good people do things like that. They do what needs done when it's right to do so. It's not an argument either, I'm just saying so. You're a good human- it's no wonder why animals like you. Think I'll still like you, when I'm human shaped again?>

Eve flicks an ear again, still sounding bright. She touched her nose to his cheek. <Then maybe I'll be the first, and you won't be able to fault me for it because I was a cat once. Or maybe the Troubles will stick around even if we beat the shroud, and I'll come stay with you because you're the only one that can hear me. Or maybe I'll get eaten by the alley monster and we'll never find out either way.>
